Yacht Charter in the Tuscan Islands

The Tuscan archipelago is a chain of islands located off the west coast of Tuscany, between the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Sea.

The Tuscan Islands are not often on British sailors' radars; with Tuscany often associated more with rolling hills and vineyards rather than a beautiful sailing ground. Within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park', there are seven islands affectionately referred to as the 'Seven Sisters.

A destination where crews can combine their love of sailing, good food and spectacular scenery, we think sailing the Tuscan Islands is a winner!

Where can we sail from?

There is just the one base in which to explore the Tuscan Islands from.

Follonica (1 hour 45 minutes from Pisa airport) – Marina di Scarlino at Follonica is a modern marina with shore based facilities. Within walking distance there is a small grocery shop and bakery, while 7km away there is a large supermarket.

Are the Tuscan Islands a good sailing ground?

In a word, yes! The Tuscan Islands have a typical Mediterranean climate where summers are dry, breezy and warm with a West – North Westerly prevailing wind. Around the islands of Capraia, Elba and down the mainland coast to Giannutri there are often South Easterly winds. Perfecto!

Are there any hidden surprises?

In Italy the mooring fees vary according to yacht length and also when in the season you are sailing. As a general rule high season runs from June to August, sometimes until mid-September – each marina has a different season.

The costs of mooring fees for a 39ft yacht range from €30 to upwards of €100 per night, with prices sometimes rising to double the cost when staying over a weekend. When sailing in Italy there are anchorages available, some of the better anchorages have mooring buoys which you do have to pay for, but are less expensive than a marina.

The cost of taxis and private transfers in Italy can be expensive, so where possible our top tip would be to reach your destination by train.

How can I get there?

When visiting the Tuscan Islands the airport of choice would be Pisa, this is the closest airport with flights with Easyjet from London Gatwick, London Luton and Bristol, with Ryan Air from London Stanstead and Edinburgh and with Jet2 from Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, East Midlands and Manchester.
